EXPLORING HISTORY THROUGH VIRTUAL REALITY

PROJECT 12/2024 – APS CSR 2024

The Digital Literacy and Transversal Skills Team, in collaboration with the Curriculum Entitlement Department within the Secretariat for Catholic Education, is leading an exciting new project: Exploring History through Virtual Reality (VR). This initiative is co-financed by the APS Bank CSR Funding Scheme.

Through this innovative project, Year 7 and 8 students will experience Maltese historical sites—such as Għar Dalam and Ta’ Skorba Temples—in a fully immersive way using 360° VR technology. Each experience includes narration, quizzes, and interactive elements, all carefully aligned with the national history syllabus.

This project aims to:

  • Foster a love for Maltese history and cultural heritage
  • Enhance historical understanding and critical thinking
  • Promote cross-curricular literacy
  • Raise awareness of environmental and heritage conservation
  • Support equal access to quality digital education (in line with SDG 4)

A pilot phase will be implemented in one school using a full VR kit, with plans for future expansion to all Church schools across Malta.

Currently, both teams are working on the creation of engaging lesson plans and conducting on-site photographic assignments that will be developed into the 360° VR experiences.

To support the pilot phase, the Secretariat for Catholic Education has invested in a dedicated kit consisting of five VR headsets and two tablets, which were purchased through the funds received from APS Bank as part of their CSR initiative.
