Centred on the conference theme Inspire, Foster, Educate: Global Research in Education Today, her presentation showcased key findings from a two-year action research study conducted in a Maltese Church school. The study demonstrates how AI-supported narrative reporting can strengthen formative assessment practices, enhance teacher agency, home–school collaboration and significantly improve efficiency by reducing the time and workload traditionally associated with report writing. This research will be published in July 2026 in the Malta Journal of Education, contributing to national and international discourse on innovative, evidence-based reporting practices in early years education.

La Salle Malta, the network of Lasallian Colleges in Malta, will host the 26th Annual Congress
of ASSEDIL from Wednesday, 23rd April to Saturday, 26th April 2025. The event will be held
at Stella Maris College, Gżira, and will bring together over 120 educational leaders from
Lasallian universities, schools, and institutions across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the
Middle East.
ASSEDIL, the Association of Lasallian Educational Leaders, is a key platform for collaboration
and exchange among leaders committed to the Lasallian educational mission in the region.
This year’s Congress will explore the theme: “Growing Together in Lasallian Spirituality,”
highlighting the importance of shared faith, values, and service in education.
Inspired by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of educators, the De La Salle Brothers
and their lay partners provide a human and Christian education to millions of children and
young people worldwide, particularly those on the margins of society. The Congress will
provide an opportunity for reflection, formation, and renewal of commitment to this vital
mission.
A special highlight of the Congress will be a Mass celebrated by His Excellency the Auxiliary
Bishop of Malta Monsignor Joseph Galea Curmi on Friday, 25th April. The Congress will
conclude on Saturday, 26th April with an address by the Superior General of the De La Salle
Brothers, Brother Armin Luistro, who will be visiting Malta for the occasion. Following the
Congress, Brother Armin will remain in Malta for an official visit to the Lasallian educational
institutions on the island: De La Salle College, Stella Maris College, and St Benild School.
This significant international gathering underlines Malta’s role in the wider Lasallian family
and its ongoing contribution to faith-based education in the region.
Commenting about the event, Joseph Gilson, Chairperson of the Board of La Salle Malta ,
said : “Hosting this year’s ASSEDIL Congress is both an honour and a responsibility. It’s a
unique opportunity for us to reflect together as Lasallian leaders, to deepen our spiritual
roots, and to strengthen our common mission of serving young people, especially those
most in need.”

On 11 March, at the Valletta Design Cluster, Church School teachers of French, led by their Head of Department at the Secretariat for Catholic Education, Ms Prescovia Deidun, followed Continuous Professional Development training involving two interventions by UM academics. Dr Anne-Marie Bezzina Busuttil, Head of the Department of French at the Faculty of Arts, gave a corpus-based presentation explaining how teachers’ questioning strategies influence or even pre-define learner responses in whole-class foreign language interactional exchanges, leading to suggestions for effective foreign language classroom elicitation.

This fed into a workshop on questioning strategies, prepared and coordinated by Ms Anna Scicluna, Coordinator of the French subject area within the Department of Languages and Humanities of the Faculty of Education. In this workshop, Ms Scicluna illustrated model practice and stimulated participant teachers to balance and correctly sequence display and referential questions, also by using probing questions that induce learners to produce longer, more elaborate and more cognitively demanding utterances.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna, as President of the Maltese Episcopal Conference, has appointed Fr Mark Ellul as the new Delegate for Catholic Education to assist the Episcopal Conference in the Church’s work on education. Fr Mark’s appointment reflects the Church’s renewed commitment to strengthening Catholic education in Malta and Gozo. He is currently Head of The Archbishop’s Seminary School in Rabat.

The Archbishop expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Rev. Dr Charles Mallia O. Carm for his nearly 15 years of dedicated service as Delegate for Catholic Education.

In his new role, Fr Mark Ellul will oversee the Secretariat for Catholic Education, which operates under the jurisdiction of the Maltese Episcopal Conference. The Secretariat supports and coordinates 55 Church schools, and provides administrative, curricular, psycho-social and pastoral support to Church schools, collectively educating nearly 17,000 students, approximately one-third of Malta and Gozo’s student population.

Fr Mark Ellul, 45, received his priestly formation at the Archbishop’s Seminary in Rabat and the Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Malta, and a Master of Science Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Leicester. He is presently finalising his Doctorate in Educational Leadership at University College London.

Ordained a priest on 23 June 2010, Fr Mark has served as deputy head at The Archbishop’s Seminary for two years and as headmaster for 13 years. He currently serves pastorally at the Senglea Parish and is a member of both the MATSEC Board and the Church Schools Association.

In its mission to be an inclusive Church that welcomes, accompanies and serves, the Church in Malta and Gozo reaffirms the importance of providing Catholic education inspired by Gospel values. This commitment highlights the Church’s dedication to nurturing holistic development, fostering dialogue, and promoting mutual understanding within Malta’s educational sector.

This collaboration is set to provide teachers and students of VET hospitality with exposure to the hospitality industry, whilst also aligning with the Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) syllabus.

The MoU signed on the 8th of October at the Archbishop’s Curia, outlines the opportunity for students to gain practical insights and skills within a higher education setting. Moreover, it will offer students practical, on-site sessions to address the gap in exposure to industrial kitchen environments within secondary schools.

Dr Ian Mifsud, Director General SfCE, stated that together with Catholic Church Schools, the Secretariat for Catholic Education is committed to fostering a relevant and meaningful Catholic Educational experience aimed at a revitalised and sustainable common good. This valued collaboration with ITS offers students of VET Hospitality attending Catholic Church Schools an opportunity to deepen their understanding and skills associated with this Industry, enhancing their learning especially in its application to their everyday lives. Moreover, it may provide these students with tools to make better informed choices for their future studies and careers.

The Heads of Department for VET, who were instrumental to this partnership, will in the coming weeks coordinate orientation visits for teachers at the ITS premises in Luqa where professionals there will explain the various areas of interest and demonstrate what the upcoming student experience there will be.

We are confident that both students and their teachers will benefit greatly from the knowledge and skills that they will be experiencing at ITS.

The STEMMERSION Project is part/financed by the National STEM Community Fund of Esplora Interactive Science Centre (Malta Council for Science and Technology) on behalf of the National STEM Engagement Working Group.

The STEMMERSION project is an innovative educational initiative that recently celebrated the successful conclusion of its pilot phase with a dissemination event held on June 24th at Fort St. Angelo, Cospicua

This event marked a significant milestone for the project, which aims to assist primary school educators by providing innovative resources and strategies to effectively teach challenging aspects from the Primary Science syllabus from a local perspective. The Department for Curriculum Entitlement, within the Secretariat for Catholic Education, through the Digital and Transversal Skills and Science Education Heads of Department, played a pivotal role in developing these resources. The team ensured that these resources are tailored to the Maltese educational context and address the shortage of digital STEM resources that reflect the local environment.

During the event, participants were engaged in a morning of learning and inspiration. The program included an overview of the project’s progress and practical insights into how the resources have been applied in classrooms. Interactive workshops allowed educators to explore the materials firsthand, while testimonials from teachers and students—representing over 300 students and 30 educators from St. Joseph Mater Boni Consilii School and St. Paul’s Missionary College—highlighted the transformative potential of STEMMERSION in STEM education.

The resources developed through STEMMERSION, including 360-degree virtual tours of local STEM environments, interviews with Maltese professionals offering insights into STEM careers, and hands-on activities such as experiments, Augmented Reality, robotics, and podcast production, were particularly praised for making STEM subjects more engaging and relatable for students. These activities were designed to foster a deeper appreciation for local environments and STEM-related careers while promoting cross-curricular learning and the development of scientific, digital, and transversal skills.
With the pilot phase now complete, STEMMERSION enters an exciting new chapter. All resources evaluated during the pilot are now publicly available, free of charge, through the project’s official website: www.csm.edu.mt/stemmersion . This open-access approach ensures that educators and students across the Maltese Islands, and beyond, can benefit from these innovative materials, whether in formal educational settings or through independent learning.

As the project continues to evolve, it remains dedicated to supporting educators and inspiring the next generation of students, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in an ever-changing world. The success of STEMMERSION has been made possible through the collaboration of many individuals, including educators, researchers, students, and professionals. The project team—Roberta Trapani Maggi and Natalie Calleja Lombardi, Heads of the Department for Digital Literacy and Transversal Skills, along with Alexia Micallef Gatt, Head of the Department for Science Education, together with their directors —express their heartfelt gratitude to all participants and stakeholders, involved in the development and pilot phase. Looking ahead, STEMMERSION will continue to empower educators, ensuring that students are well-prepared to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future.
